The fine people over at http://blackmetalownsyou.blogspot.com/ recently had a post about a documentary, which you can listen to here: http://www.prx.org/pieces/89004-sangre-y-tierra-what-blood-what-earth
This excellent documentary is about Marvin Quinones, the sole person behind the Massachusetts black metal band Sangre Y Tierra. Quinones comes across as both intelligent and affable. Still the piece doesn't shirk from sharing some of Sangre Y Tierra's aggressive music with us, and we get to hear quite a bit of it. The documentary also does a good job at letting Quinones speak and giving you a sense of the sorts of things that drive him musically.
Looking towards his own Puerto Rican ancestry as an influence, the raw yet atmospheric sounding Sangre Y Tierra (an apt name) broaches lyrical themes relating to the Taino people. This influence also extends beyond lyrics into instrumentation through the fantastic use of the cuatro, an instrument in the guitar family that is also the national instrument of Puerto Rico.
As both a guitar teacher and counselor, Quinones clearly has experience in communicating with people, and he is a very interesting person to listen to. That, combined with the really cool music is why I highly recommend listening to this documentary. As if that wasn't enough, we also get to hear a bit from Nicholas Holtz, the man behind another Massachusetts black metal band - Disguster.
